Pressure Core Holder/ Triaxial core holder

The Pressure Core Holder is a high-performance laboratory device engineered for advanced core analysis in the oil and gas industry as well as research institutions. It enables precise evaluation of reservoir rock behavior under simulated downhole conditions by applying controlled axial and radial confining pressures, along with fluid injection through the core sample.

This system is widely used for studying gas and liquid permeability, porosity, multiphase fluid flow, formation damage, rock–fluid interactions, secondary water flooding, enhanced oil recovery (EOR), steam flooding, and other core flooding experiments.

Depending on the method of confining pressure application, the pressure core holder is available in multiple configurations, including Hassler Type, Biaxial (Hydrostatic) Type, Triaxial Type, and Pressure-Tapped Type. Each design incorporates proven standard features while allowing flexibility for customization to meet specific experimental requirements.

  • Maximum working pressure: 7,000 psi (design range available from 5,000 to 15,000 psi)
  • Maximum operating temperature: 150 °C
  • Core sample diameter: 1 and 1.5 inches
  • Core sample length: adjustable from 1 to 6 inches
  • Body material: 316 Stainless Steel or Hastelloy C, for providing high strength and chemical resistance
  • Inlet connections: 2 × 1/8 in NPT (female)
  • Outlet connection: 1 × 1/8 in NPT (female)
  • Sample sleeve (cuff) materials: Viton, Teflon, or Nitrile, selected based on temperature and fluid compatibility
  • Inlet and outlet ports: 1
  • Certification: Hydrostatic Test Certificate; PED certification available on request
  • The rock core sample is first enclosed in a high-strength elastic sleeve and positioned inside the pressure vessel body. Precision-machined end plugs are installed at both ends to ensure a fully sealed, leak-tight system capable of operating under high-pressure conditions. The system supports both biaxial and triaxial loading, allowing either equal or independently controlled radial and axial stresses to accurately reproduce in-situ reservoir conditions.
  • A confining fluid is introduced into the annular space between the vessel wall and the elastic sleeve, generating uniform radial pressure around the core. This confining pressure effectively simulates overburden stress and the compressive forces imposed by surrounding geological formations, ensuring realistic testing conditions for laboratory evaluation.
  • Test fluids are then injected into the inlet end of the core at precisely controlled pressures and flow rates. As the fluid passes through the sample, a pressure differential develops between the inlet and outlet ports. This pressure drop is continuously monitored and used to determine absolute and relative permeability, providing reliable insight into fluid transport behavior within the rock.
  • Darcy’s law describes the relationship between fluid flow rate and pressure gradient through a porous medium. By measuring the volume of fluid passing through the core per unit time under a known applied pressure, the permeability characteristics of the rock sample can be accurately calculated.

Design and Customization

Each pressure core holder incorporates the standard features associated with its respective design type. Standard parameters can be modified to meet specific customer requirements.
